The Historic Square and Its Visitor Stops

The Historic Square and Its Visitor Stops

The Public Square brings together Dahlonega’s historic core and the former courthouse, which now houses the Dahlonega Gold Museum. The city’s gold-rush story reaches back to 1828, when the area’s first major gold rush began.

Hancock Park sits just off the Historic Square at 54 North Park Street, on the corner of North Park Street and Warwick Street. The City gives its hours as sunrise to sunset. Inside the park, you’ll find benches, a pavilion, a lending library, a walking loop and the Dahlonega Gold Mine All Abilities Playground.

Allow time to wander the historic streets as well as the square: the downtown district includes walking tours and green-space parks, so you can combine a look at the town’s buildings with a pause outdoors.

Shops, Food and Practical Breaks

Shops, Food and Practical Breaks

The tourism board describes shaded brick sidewalks connecting shops, galleries, restaurants and entertainment in 19th-century buildings. Downtown has more than 100 shops, restaurants and other local small businesses, including more than a dozen restaurants.

Parking options vary by location and time limits. The City identifies Warwick Street as an all-day option one block from the Gold Museum and downtown. North Chestatee parking, across from Conner Memorial Garden, is available for three hours within walking distance of downtown. North Park Street has spaces near shops, including 15-minute loading, three-hour and accessible parking.

For longer stays, the tourism board recommends the North Park Street and Warwick Street lots. Three-hour parking areas around the Public Square and Choice Street Parking Lot are enforced from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The University of North Georgia parking deck at South Chestatee Street and Choice Avenue is available after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Drivers looking for EV charging can use the all-day lot on Choice Avenue behind the Holiday Inn Express, which has a Level 2 charging port. Parking rules and availability can change, so check the City of Dahlonega’s official site before you go.

Getting Between the Hotel and Downtown

Getting Between the Hotel and Downtown

Downtown is about a 20-minute walk from Dahlonega Mountain Inn, or about a 4-minute drive. On foot, you can make the square your first stop, then continue among the nearby historic streets, shops and park.

If you drive, choose parking based on how long you plan to stay: Warwick Street is an all-day option, while other downtown spaces have shorter time limits. Check posted restrictions when you arrive.

Pairing Downtown with a Mine Visit

The underground tour takes 40 minutes, and tours leave every 20 to 35 minutes throughout the day. The tour includes three flights of stairs and two ramps; strollers, walkers and wheelchairs are not allowed.

Adult admission is $24.95 plus tax for ages 13 and older, child admission is $15.95 plus tax for ages 3–12, and children under 2 enter free.

The mine is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It closes on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Check Consolidated Gold Mine’s official site before you go.
